What is Vascular Interventional Radiology?

Vascular Interventional radiologists are physicians who specialize in minimally invasive, targeted procedures and treatments.  The procedures are performed advanced imaging guidance to visualize inside the body while narrow tubes (catheters) and other small instruments are guided through a tiny nick in the skin to the site of a problem.  The procedures have advanced medicine to such a degree that they have often replaced open surgical procedures, prompting those surgeons to adopt and learn our techniques. Unfortunately, these techniques are imitated but not always duplicated, in terms of quality and outcomes.  The procedures when performed by trained and experienced physicians are less risky, involve less pain, and have extremely short recovery time.  With many of the procedures we perform at the IVC, there are no traditional surgical alternatives.

Vascular & Interventional Radiology --
The Best Kept Secret in Healthcare

Only three percent of Americans are aware of interventional radiologists according to a national survey (Riley Research Associates, 2001).  Our minimally invasive treatments are available for many diseases, but not many patients know to ask about them, or even seek out a second opinion from a vascular interventional radiologist. In the past, vascular & interventional radiologists have been known as the "doctor's doctor," and patients didn't have direct contact with this specialty.  But times are changing, and interventional radiologists are now often a "first choice" doctor for patients.  Why?  Simple. Because we look at the entire function of your body-- we have interaction and treat patients from nearly every type of physician and utilize our expertise in imaging to really understand your body's health.  Minimally invasive treatments are available for so many diseases... why wouldn't you explore these less invasive options first, before proceeding to major surgery?  Some examples of our procedures which have now become first-line, standard of care include angioplasty, stenting, aneurysm repair, varicose vein ablation, kidney stone access and removal, vertebroplasty/ kyphoplasty,... to name a few!

  • Over 90% of our procedures are performed as an outpatient or require only a short hospital stay.
  • Only a tiny incision is required for the procedures.
  • Pain and recovery time are significantly reduced.
  • General anesthesia is not required.
  • Risk of infection is reduced or nearly eliminated.
  • Our procedures are less expensive than surgery.
  • Outcomes are equal or better than surgical alternatives.

"We are here for you. Gone are the days of waiting weeks for consults, scheduling procedures, and waiting for results to hear only one option offered for treatment."
